If there was ever a project that deserved to kick off Finish the Forgotten Projects, this is it.
This cross-stitch quilt has been with me for over 25 years. Yes- longer than two decades. It was given to me as a Christmas gift by my great-grandmother, along with the expectation (spoken or not) that one day it would be finished, loved, and maybe even passed down again.
No pressure or anything
How This Cross-Stitch Quilt Project Started
I was young when this quilt began- young enough to have plenty of enthusiasm and absolutely no concept of how long hand-stitched projects actually take. I remember sitting at home , learning how to make the stitches, choosing the colors, and imagining how beautiful the finished quilt would be.
And then life happened.
High school, work, college, marriage, kids, baking, sewing, paper crafts, divorce, multiple moves… the quilt was carefully packed away, pulled out occasionally, worked on for a bit, then tucked back into storage again.
Over time, it became something more than just an unfinished cross-stitch project. It became a reminder- of my great-grandmother, of slower days, and of a version of myself who thought she had endless time.
Why This Cross-Stitch Quilt Has Taken More than 25 Years
There’s no dramatic reason this quilt wasn’t finished sooner. No big mistake. No lost supplies.
Just the slow drift of time.
Cross-stitch is quiet, patient work. It requires focus, good lighting, and a willingness to sit still- three things that don’t always come easily in busy seasons of life. Each time I pulled it out, I felt both comforted and a little guilty. Comforted by the memories. Guilty that it still wasn’t done.
Eventually, it became the project I always said I’d finish “someday.”
Why I’m Finishing This Heirloom Quilt Now
This year feels different.
January and February are about revisiting what I already have- physically and creatively. Instead of starting something shiny and new, I want to honor the projects that mattered enough to keep.
This quilt isn’t just thread and fabric. It’s time spent with my great-grandmother. A lesson in patience. Proof that creativity doesn’t have an expiration date.
And honestly? It doesn’t deserve to sit in a box for another decade. I want it finished to share with my future grandchildren.
Where I’m Starting With This Unfinished Cross-Stitch Project
Right now, my goal is simple:
- Assess how mush is done.
- Organize the floss and pattern
- Set realistic stitching goals (very realistic- this is still me)
I’m not rushing it. I’m not setting impossible deadlines. Just committing to showing up consistently and letting progress happen one stitch at a time.
Finishing What Matters Most
If you have an unfinished craft project that’s been waiting quietly in a closet or drawer, I hope this encourages you to pull it out. Not with guilt- but with curiosity.
Projects don’t have to be fast to be meaningful.
This quilt has already given me memories. Now it’s time to give it a finish.
Stay tuned for updates as I continue working on the heirloom piece- and move one step closer to truly finishing the forgotten projects.
